University students in Tanzania have asked the government top review all mining contracts in order to avoid mistakes, such as what has happened in the recent mineral concentrates saga.

The students, under their umbrella, the Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Students Organizations (Tahiliso), gave their views during a forum organized to congratulate President John Magufuli for his decision on banning the transportation of mineral sand to foreign countries.

This comes in the wake of a report that was handed over to President Magufuli early May and the second one handed over last week by the committee appointed to analyze the economic and legal implications of the mining contracts.

“Fake mining contracts that were signed by the government caused huge losses the nation.  It is high time all mining contracts were reviewed,” said by William Haule, a student at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)

He said the country’s natural resources should benefit the local people and the country should put in place good policies and implement them.

Contributing during the forum, Ms Gertrude Joseph a student from Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy, said all relevant authorities must execute their obligations according to the rules and regulations when entering the contracts.

“If we want to save our natural resources we must revisit our contracts and those in power should respect the law because this loss we are discussing here was caused by few people,” she said

Meanwhile, Alex Stephano from Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) said the amount of money that was lost is small compared to the resources available in the country, so there is a need to invest in other sectors too.
